SUMMARY:From Rum Row to Hypocrite’s Row: A Conversation with Eliot Kleinberg
DESCRIPTION:Membership Event \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$20 for Non-Members\, Members Free (Members must sign in to register) \n\n\n\nStep back into the daring days of the Roaring Twenties when Prohibition was the law—but in South Florida\, it was often treated as little more than a suggestion. \n\n\n\nJoin acclaimed journalist and historian Eliot Kleinberg for an engaging fireside chat at HistoryMiami Museum as he explores the colorful world of rumrunners\, smugglers\, and lawmen who shaped Miami during Prohibition. \n\n\n\nKleinberg will discuss his upcoming novel Hypocrite’s Row\, the first installment in the Adventures of Nate Moran series. Set against the backdrop of 1920s South Florida\, the story follows Miami police detective Nate Moran as he navigates a city where wealthy elites\, gangsters\, and tourists all sought forbidden liquor—and where the smugglers supplying it often became folk heroes. \n\n\n\nThrough storytelling and conversation\, Kleinberg will share the real-life history behind the novel\, including the rum-running networks that thrived just miles off Miami’s coast and the complex relationship between crime\, law enforcement\, and high society during Prohibition in the United States. \n\n\n\nGuests will have the opportunity to purchase Hypocrite’s Row following the program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n REGISTER \n \n\n\n\n\nEliot KleinbergAuthor of Hypocrite’s Row\n\n\n\nFlorida native Eliot Kleinberg\, creator of the Civil War historical novel “Peace River\,” the”Adventures of Nate Moran” novels\, and the original “Weird Florida” books\, spent nearly a half-century reporting on local news and writing about Florida and Florida history. He produced two history columns and wrote fourteen books — and co-wrote or contributed to several more — all of them about Florida. Son of longtime journalist Howard Kleinberg\, he lectures regularly on Florida topics and runs a blog on better writing called “Something Went Horribly Wrong.” www.ekfla.com \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Information \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Helpful Tips\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Program check-in will begin 15-minutes prior to the program start. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Wayfinding\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n This program will take place in the Museum’s South Building theater.	\n \n Getting to HistoryMiami Museum\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Parking\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n There is nearby parking available in the Miami-Dade Cultural Center Garage\, 50 NW 2nd Avenue. SUMMARY:Stiltsville & Key Biscayne Sunset Cruise
DESCRIPTION:Join HistoryMiami Museum’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul George\, as he recounts the history of Biscayne Bay. Discover the storied past of Stiltsville\, a series of colorful wooden houses built on the flats of the bay and located inside Biscayne National Park. Known in the 1940’s\, 50’s and 60’s as a playground for the wealthy and well-connected\, Stiltsville was once home to the now infamous Crawfish Eddies and Bikini Club. Learn how this once vivacious community on stilts dwindled down to the seven houses that remain today. Dr. George will narrate and share stories of nefarious gangsters\, stunning graffiti\, and fabulous parties while guests cruise past the Cape Florida Lighthouse\, Key Biscayne\, and the City of Miami. \n\n\n\nToday\, Biscayne National Park and the Stiltsville Trust work together to support the preservation of the remaining Stiltsville houses so that future generations can experience its unique history. \n\n\n\nWater and soda service is included in the ticket price. Additional light snacks and drinks are available for purchase from Island Queen Cruises. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker:\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. SUMMARY:Panel Discussion—The Age of Revolutions and Its Lasting Impacts on South Florida
DESCRIPTION:Revolutions have shaped the modern world—reshaping governments\, economies\, and cultures far beyond the moments in which they occurred. This panel discussion explores the enduring legacy of revolutionary movements\, beginning with the American Revolution and extending to revolutions in the Caribbean\, Latin America\, and beyond\, and how their ideas\, conflicts\, and migrations continue to influence South Florida today. \n\n\n\nThrough historical context and contemporary perspectives\, panelists will examine how revolutionary ideals such as liberty\, citizenship\, resistance\, and self-determination have shaped Miami’s evolving political\, social\, and cultural landscape. The conversation will highlight themes of exile\, identity\, and civic engagement\, inviting audiences to consider how global and American revolutionary movements have left lasting marks on our local community. \n\n\n\nPresented in conjunction with the National Archives’ Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation\, a traveling exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of the United States\, on view at HistoryMiami Museum June 20th through July 5th. Enjoy complimentary admission to the Museum and view the exhibition. \n\n\n\nMembers: $25\, Non-Members: $35\, Students & Educators: $15 (with valid ID)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers:\n\n\n\n\nRobin F.
