DESCRIPTION:TO REGISTER CLICK HERE \nIn honor of the 50th anniversary of the “Fight of the Century\,” HistoryMiami Museum is proud to display The ALI/MIA portfolio\, a one-of-a-kind set of handmade photographs of Muhammad Ali training for this historic bout with Joe Frazier. On the anniversary of the fight\, we invite you to join a dynamic panel discussion that will discuss these images\, offer a deep look into the racial equity struggles Ali faced while training for this fight\, and explore why this showdown is considered one of the most important sporting events of all time. \nAs a Black man in Miami\, Ali dealt with racism on a daily basis while training. Panelist Dr. Marvin Dunn will delve into the psychology of Ali coping with the hurt and rage he felt due to his experiences. The panel will also explain how he gave Black Miamians a sense of pride during what was a stressful time\, which included the destruction of Overtown to create the interstate. \nThe panelists will then dive into why this fight was the dubbed “The Fight of the Century.” Ali had been stripped of his title at the height of his career after his refusal to sign up for the draft for the Vietnam War. He stated that he would not fight for a country that was still oppressing its own people. After three years away from the ring\, Ali was making his come back and boxing historian Ramiro Ortiz will discuss why this fight was about more than boxing. \nNo newspaper covered Ali more than his hometown paper\, Louisville’s Courier-Journal. The paper has a treasure trove of Ali photographs that had recently been rediscovered and many from the archive had never been published. Hear the story of how the photographs came to light from photographer Jebb Harris and Image Maker Andrew Kaufman\,  and how they found a permanent home at HistoryMiami Museum. \nPanelists: Dr. Marvin Dunn\, Historian; Ramiro Ortiz\, Boxing Historian; Jebb Harris\, former Staff Photographer\, Courrier Journal; and Andrew Kaufman\, Image Maker. Moderator: Jorge Zamanillo\, Executive Director\, HistoryMiami Museum.
