SUMMARY:History Talks: Miami’s Boom Era Communities—Coral Gables
DESCRIPTION:Journey through time during our History Talks program series! History Talks delves into the layered histories of Miami and greater South Florida. Hosted by HistoryMiami Museum’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul S. George\, and presented in conversation with a community stakeholder\, this lecture series will explore the history of some of Miami’s boom era communities—Miami Shores\, Coral Gables\, Opa-locka\, and Hialeah.  \n\n\n\nA History of Coral Gables with Dr. George in Conversation with Dorothy M. View archival images of some of Coral Gables’ most notable landmarks\, including the Venetian Pool\, Biltmore Hotel\, and DeSoto Fountain. \n\n\n\nDr. George will be joined in conversation by community member Dorothy Martin Wallace. Mrs. Wallace will share stories of her life living in the McFarlane Homestead Subdivision in the 1950s and as one of the first African American women to integrate the graduate school at the University of Miami. \n\n\n\nCapacity is limited. Seating is available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n\n\n\nMembers: $20\, Non-Members: $30\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register for Full Series \n \n\n\n\n\nLearn more about History Talks: Miami’s Boom Era Communities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers:\n\n\n\n\nDorothy M. Wallace\n\n\n\nDorothy M. Wallace was born in Morocco\, Missouri and later moved to Miami with her family in 1951. She holds a Batchelor’s Degree from Lincoln University and attended University of Miami’s School of Education\, becoming one of the first two African Americans to receive a Master’s Degree in 1963 from the university. With a distinguished career in Miami-Dade County Public Schools\, she has served as a teacher\, chairperson\, assistant principal\, and in 1969\, integrated the staff of Northeast Area District Office\, Miami-Dade County Public Schools as the Assistant Coordinator of Student Services. Dorothy is\, perhaps\, however\, best known for her pioneering work with teen parents. In 1972\, she was selected to lead Continuing Opportunities for Purposeful Education (COPE) Center South\, an alternative educational program. As a reflection of her leadership\, COPE Center South was renamed Dorothy M. Wallace COPE Center South in 1997. Being one of the “first” in many areas\, Mrs. Wallace has a legacy in integrating many clubs\, organizations\, and professional associations\, thus paving the way for other women and minorities. She attributes her parents’ work ethics\, values\, and entrepreneurial spirit as the guideposts of her life. \n\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. George\, Ph.D.Resident Historian\n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, HistoryMiami Museum’s Resident Historian Dr. Paul S.
